Supported Independent Living is help with the everyday tasks of running a home, provided where you live. It is not a building and it is not a placement — it is the support that comes to the home, whether you share with housemates or live on your own.
Motherly Health Care is a registered NDIS provider (registration number 4053350558) delivering SIL supports across Oakville, Windsor, Richmond, Pitt Town, Box Hill, Rouse Hill, Kellyville, Blacktown and the wider Hawkesbury and north-west Sydney region, as well as metropolitan Adelaide.
What SIL covers
SIL is about the tasks and skills of living independently, with support sized to what you need rather than to a standard package.
- Personal care — showering, dressing, grooming, continence support, transfers
- Meals — planning, shopping, cooking, and building the skills to do more of it yourself
- Keeping the house running — cleaning, laundry, rubbish, basic household organisation
- Medication support in line with your plan and your prescriber’s instructions
- Getting to appointments, work, study and community activities
- Budgeting, bills and managing money day to day
- Building and keeping relationships with housemates, family and friends
- Support to manage behaviours of concern, delivered under a behaviour support plan where one is in place
- Overnight support — active, sleepover, or on-call — depending on what your situation requires
How much support — and when
SIL is generally described in terms of how much support you need across a day and night. Some people need someone available around the clock. Others need concentrated support morning and evening, with drop-in help during the day. Some need only a few hours and an on-call number.
Getting this right matters, because a SIL quote is built on it. We would rather assess carefully and describe your needs accurately than over-quote to be safe or under-quote to win the work. Both cause problems later.
Shared living, and living alone
Sharing can work very well — it brings company, and it makes some supports more affordable because they are shared across a household. It can also go badly if the people sharing are not compatible. We take housemate matching seriously: routines, noise, sleep patterns, communication, cultural and religious practice, and whether people actually want to live together.
Living alone with SIL support is also an option, and for some people it is the right one. We will not push you toward a share house because it is easier to staff.
SIL and housing are two different things
This trips a lot of people up, so it is worth being clear. SIL funds the support. It does not fund the house. Your home may be private rental, social housing, a family home, or Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) if you are eligible for it — SDA is funded separately and has its own eligibility criteria.
You can usually change your SIL provider without moving house, and you can move house without automatically changing provider. Keeping those two decisions separate protects your choice and control in both.
How SIL is funded
SIL sits in your Core Supports budget under Assistance with Daily Life, and it is a stated support — the funding is allocated specifically for SIL. Funding is normally based on a roster of care describing the support the household needs, prepared with you and submitted to the NDIA.
Every plan is different. If you are not sure which budget a support sits under, bring your plan to the conversation and we will go through it with you line by line — or talk to your support coordinator or Local Area Coordinator before you commit to anything.
Safeguards you should expect from any SIL provider
- A written service agreement you had time to read, and can end
- Clear information about how to raise a concern — with us, and directly with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission
- Workers with current checks and training appropriate to your support needs
- Restrictive practices used only where they are authorised, documented in a behaviour support plan, and reported as required
- Your privacy respected — it is your home, not a workplace you happen to live in
