Psychosocial Disability Support

Psychosocial disability describes the functional impact that a mental health condition can have on everyday life — on routine, motivation, relationships, work, study and managing a household. It is not the diagnosis itself. Two people with the same diagnosis can need completely different support, and the same person can need different support in different months.

Motherly Health Care is a registered NDIS provider (registration number 4053350558) delivering psychosocial supports across Oakville, Windsor, Richmond, Pitt Town, Box Hill, Rouse Hill, Kellyville, Blacktown and the wider Hawkesbury and north-west Sydney region, as well as metropolitan Adelaide.

A recovery-oriented approach

Recovery in this context does not mean the absence of symptoms. It means building a life you value — with purpose, connection and as much control as possible — alongside whatever you are living with. That framing matters, because it changes what support is for. The goal is not compliance with a program. It is your life, getting closer to how you want it.

In practice that means the plan is yours. You set the goals, you set the pace, and you can change both.

What support can include

Episodic support, and why consistency matters

Psychosocial disability is often episodic. There are periods where you need very little and periods where you need a great deal, sometimes with little warning between them. Support that only works when you are well is not much use.

We try to build support that flexes. That means keeping the arrangement in place through quiet periods rather than closing it and making you start again, and being able to increase hours when things become harder. It also means consistency of worker wherever we can manage it — telling your story from the beginning to a new person every few weeks is exhausting and it undermines the support itself.

Psychosocial Recovery Coaches

Some plans fund a Psychosocial Recovery Coach — a distinct capacity-building support delivered by someone with mental health expertise, including coaches with lived experience. A recovery coach works with you on recovery planning, building capacity and coordinating supports. It is different from general support work and different from support coordination. If your plan includes it, it is worth understanding what it is for. If you think you need it and it is not funded, raise it at your next plan reassessment.

How psychosocial support is funded

Day-to-day assistance is generally funded from Core Supports. Capacity-building goals — building skills, independence and connection — may sit under Improved Daily Living, Increased Social and Community Participation or Improved Relationships. A Psychosocial Recovery Coach is funded under Capacity Building as a stated support.

Every plan is different. If you are not sure which budget a support sits under, bring your plan to the conversation and we will go through it with you line by line — or talk to your support coordinator or Local Area Coordinator before you commit to anything.

Dignity, privacy and the right to change your mind

You decide how much you share and with whom. You can decline a support on the day. You can ask for a different worker without giving a reason. You can pause and come back. None of these are problems — they are how a service that respects you is supposed to work.

If you are in crisis right now, please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14, the NSW Mental Health Line on 1800 011 511, or emergency services on 000. We are not a crisis service, and we would rather say that plainly than have you wait on us when you need someone immediately.

Talk to us about psychosocial support

There is no wrong time to get in touch — including a period where you are doing reasonably well and want something in place before you are not.

Call 0401 776 804, email [email protected], or send the enquiry form below. We will ask what you need, explain honestly whether we are the right fit, and tell you what we can start and when. If we are not the right service for you, we will say so and point you to someone who is.
